Recently one of the most famous basketball players and NBA legend, Michael Jordan, cut the red ribbon and opened the Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic which will aim to provide care for all uninsured patients and those in need.
The location of the clinic is very important to Michael and it’s not a coincidence. It’s situated in Charlotte, North Carolina, Jordan’s home town. He said that he decided to give back to a town that shaped him and made him who he is today. He made a very emotional speech about all of the support he had from the community over the years, and how now he is giving back.
The clinic is located in the lower-income part of the city, which is important because it will benefit the underprivileged and those who are not insured and live in the area.
There was an assessment conducted by Harvard University/UC Berkeley, in 2014, and Charlotte was ranked 50th out of 50 in economic mobility for children born in poverty. Michael said that he believes that the ZIP code or neighborhood where you live should not determine the quality of health care you get and whether or not you get care.
The clinic is modern, it has 12 patient exam rooms, an X-ray room, and a space for physical therapy. The clinic will also have a social worker employed for social support purposes.
The clinic will be operated by Novant Health and their CEO said that they are deeply committed to caring for patients. He also said that the clinic will provide access to medical care for those who need it most and that it will connect them to resources to ensure their good health.
