Psychonauts 2 has been delayed yet again. The long awaited sequel to the 2005 game by Double Fine Productions will now come during 2024, as it was confirmed on Wednesday by the studio boss Tim Schafer in an update to the donors on the crowdfunding platform Fig. Sadly, this is the second delay of the game. The sequel was announced in 2015, and it was meant to come out sometime between July and September last year, when it was pushed to this year.

Both the game and the studio had a lot going on last year. Microsoft purchased the studio, as well as the publication rights to Psychonauts 2 from the publisher of the original, Starbreeze. They previously declared bankruptcy and are reorganizing. Psychonauts 2 is still coming out on all promised platforms, mainly PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

Double Fine Productions released a statement: “We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who — just like us — want the game to be as good as possible.”

Some donors, like zikadenwanderun, were not happy with this: “I am deeply disappointed in the commercial process that Psychonauts 2 has turned into. From my perspective, the crowd-funding money was used for kissing ass at conventions and now sell-out candy to publishers. I wanted to support the game, not your ego. This included a reliable work schedule as the basis for a relationship with the consumer fan base that funded it.”

Others however, were much more forgiving and understanding. AaronMengerink wrote: “Very happy with the extra time and even with Microsoft takeover as long as you keep the making of the game independent. Great job of finding such a good new publisher.”

Announced at The Game Awards in 2015 and then crowdfunded since January 2016 with more than $3,829,024 from more than 24,109 donors, the game is still under question because of all the delays.
